PostSubject: Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King   Mon Jul 07, 2008 4:19 am

Cryptopsy turned a lot of heads and drew a lot of negative reactions when they asked for all vocalists who wished to audition to be a proficient clean vocalist. A lot hoped for the best, some prepared for the worst. Admittedly, I was in the latter camp and felt Cryptopsy was about to go down a spiral. After hearing two songs that leaked early, "Bemoan The Martyr" and "Resurgence of an Empire", I felt I was correct. So when I got a copy of The Unspoken King I was hoping for the worst.

The album opens up with a decidedly deathcore track. A significant change from the Cryptopsy of old. "Worship Your Demons" fits well as an opening track for the album and prepares listeners for what is to come. Surprisingly, what lies in front of them isn't all that bad. The sound is different. It seems like your Cryptopsy cd was replaced with the latest trendy deathcore band. That being said, the album works well when you go in expecting just that. Fans looking for the old Cryptopsy will no doubt be extremely disappointed in this outing.

The cd runs through track after track of deathcore and breaks of old Cryptopsy sounds coming in briefly. One of the biggest things that listeners have to prepare themselves for is the vocal style. To me, this is where the biggest departure lies. Full on deathcore vocals and clean vocals, as well. The one thing that is most surprising is that at times, it works incredibly well. Hearing "Bemoan the Martyr" as a stand alone track deturred me, but the song flowed well within the cd and was quite enjoyable. Also, the track "Bound Dead" uses the clean vocals amazingly. This isn't to say it was all great. "The Plagued" sounded terribly out of place and utilized the new clean vocals in the worst fashion. It's definitely not the song you want to let newcomers or old Cryptopsy fans hear first.

All in all, the cd was a lot better than I was expecting. The clean vocals are actually utilized well in spots, but there is definitely room for improvement with the new vocalist. My biggest complaint is that the album drags on. It's actually a rather short album, lasting only 47 minutes, but there are many parts that go on too long and overstay their welcome. The Unspoken King shows a big shift in Cryptopsy's music. Even though it's a bit of a letdown compared to what has come before it, it leaves me interested enough to see how they will perfect their new style.

I've heard alot of good things about Cryptopsy and some bad. They sound like a rather solid band from your review.

I think you'd enjoy The Unspoken King. Hell, you'd probably like the rest of their stuff. They go from tech-death to deathcore. And really, the hardest part to get used to with either forms is their singer. Cryptopsy is a pretty solid band... I'm just not a huge fan in their choice of vocalists.

The singer is at times easy to overlook if their music is A+ quality. I haven't had much exposure to tech-death but from what i have heard i love and deathcore is very easy for me to love.

You should definitely look into them. I think every death metal fan should at least give a listen to Cryptopsy.

seeing as I'm a pretty big deathcore fan (The Faceless, Veil of Maya, Born of Osiris, Despised Icon, etc.) I may actually check this one out. Unfortunately, I am also a big fan of the Cryptopsy of old.

I think you won't be too disappointed if you go into it expecting the right thing.

It's not like it was. Not crazy technical... it's still death metal drumming, though. It didn't bother me or I never thought "Well he's not so hot anymore."

DOA saw a video of him drumming and she said that it was sped up... I try to tell her that's really just how he plays.
