PostSubject: Devourment - Butcher The Weak   Fri Jun 27, 2008 3:24 am

This is Devourment's much anticipated release after they reunited upon Ruban's release from prison.

This cd starts off with an eery audio clip, and breaks suddenly into a brutal sonic assault on the album's title track. Fans of the band would be very pleased with this brutal start. Mike's vocals soon come in adding that classic Devourment gurgling sound. While this is all good, it begins to get old very quick.

With a seemingly over-produced sound, the distorted guitars and blast beats wear listeners ears down quickly. One can tell that Devourment tried to go for something new in this venture but ended up with only mediocrity. The vocals fail to be as menacing as Ruban's or Wayne's, and the songs offer very little variation. Each song tends to bleed into each other and at the end of the cd listeners would be left wondering where each song ended and where others began.

One of the greatest treats that Devourment tried to give fans on this release was a rerecording of their classic song "Babykiller." Most that have heard of this band probably first heard that song and were intrigued by the brutallity and obscurity of the lyrics. Sadly, this song pales in comparison to that which is featured on Molesting The Decapitated. The band seems to overdo it with making this new version something special and to remember. The breakdown that comes in around 2 and half minutes is no longer a part to remember but just now blends into the rest of the song with nothing really sticking out.

While I am a loyal fan of Devourment, after listening to this album I am only left wondering what could have been with a better mixing job that wouldn't have made every song just a harsh wall of sound. The album could have been so much more if the guitars were more distinguishable. Mike's vocals could also use a little work. I just can't help but miss Ruban and Wayne's vocals while listening to this release. Also, the drumwork is a bit subpar in parts and dampens the album a bit.

A few highlights of this album are the songs "Serial Cocksucker", "Tomb of Scabs", and "Autoerotic Asphyxiation" which seem to break some of the monotony and bring back that brutal groove of the old Devourment.

Butcher the Weak is a must for fans of Devourment, but some may find themselves disappointed in the release.

**Note: This is for the ORIGINAL version, not the rerecording that was done a year later which was significantly better and fixed all the problems I had with this one.

By the sound of your review i'd avoid this album first if i ever go to experience Devourment.

The tracks you recommended sound amusing to me. Especially "Serial Cocksucker", it sounds like a song that would apply to alot of the girls at my school.

It's a song about killing whores. Good stuff.

Well, like I said, that was for the original version and I wrote that review long ago. It's the only one I have access to. I've written others... just don't have them anymore. The rerecorded version of that album is GREAT. I gave that one a 3 out of 5... The rerecording is easily a 5.

They'd have a field day with killing whores around where i live.

I'll remember to get the re-recorded version if i ever i pick it up. First impressions usually last when you try something new.

Eric Park... the same guy that's been with the band since they reformed...

I think you miss the point of Devourment, though.

But not just Devourment!!!!! Every brutal band hates whores!!! It's really hard for me to find a song that doesn't include fucking a dead girl or eating her pussy for desert or something. It's like you've heard one brutal song, and you've heard them all!!!!C'mon, bands, spice up a little!!

And wait, so Eric was the drummer, huh? Alrighty then, now I can recallibate the gears and adjust my charts to indicate this fact. We very well might've saved the planet!!! WOWEE!!!

I was sasying you miss the point of Devourment in general. Perhaps you don't get the entirety of death metal...

Up until Unleash The Carnivore the whole idea behind Devourment was being the most brutal and heavy. This included having laughingly retarded lyrics. Their dumbass lyrics were a conscious effort, it's not like they just couldn't do better. They meant to be stupid. And any band with lyrics that are seen as graphic or brutal are meant to be stupid. People think of death metal as some incredibly serious genre... but the bands doing that kind of stuff are only being intentionally stupid and having fun. They mean to say things that are offensive because they think it's funny. I remember people reading Majewski's lyrics and talking about how fucked up the guy is. And he's really just a really cool and laid back guy. Nothing abnormal about him, really.

Seems Majewski took it seriously on their newest album. And the band really improved because of it.

BTW, I post on a message board with Majewski and members of various other death metal bands... so I'm not just trying to defend the bands or make up anything. This shit is directly from the guys themselves.

Insidious Descrepency, Incinerate, Defleshuary, Animals Killing People, Humanity Falls, Field of Dead Gods, Dismal Lapse,

I don't know... there are a lot of them. There is one guy from a pretty famous band. Can't remember what their name is, though. Oh.. Spawn of Possession, that's it.

Oh, wow, I so gotta join that board!!!!
And, uh, I don't know if you are familiar with any, but there are also bands with such racist lyrics and they really sound like they are trying to provoke nazism or somethin'!! I don't know if they are dead serious or just doing it for the fun of it!!! So, should I take those lyrics seriously?????
