So after MMLP2 got me interested in rap again (yes, I know, I'm a faggot etc.), I started listening to illmatic, since everyone keeps jizzing all over it. I really dig the jazzy/loungy sound of it. It's not exactly Miles Davis, but the production appeals a lot more to me than most modern stuff.

Where should I go from here?

MMLP2 was awful. I think that album would turn me off from Rap.  Tongue

It was mainly Rhyme or Reason and Rap God that stuck, but still. I realise it's not a "rapper's rap album" in that sense.

That's a pretty sizeable list. What would be the closest to early Nas?

In terms of sound?

I'd say Black Milk or The Roots

Hard to say since Illmatic was kind of a one of a kind record.  Tongue

Are you serious? Tribe's the only pure recommendation for the original request. Some good stuff that's either not a good fit or too large a discography to select from that doesn't fit/isn't good, and a buncha other shit that just sucks lol

Gang Starr up to and especially including Moment of Truth, mid to late Geto Boys, the first two Pharcyde albums, first two Souls of Mischief albums, first three Tupac albums....

That Elzhi track was decent. The backing track is pretty much exactly it, but the song didn't really grab me.

Already listen to Outkast, they're like my hip-hop alibi along with The Streets.

Checked out the first few Gang Starr's and the instrumentation is spot on what I want. However, the rapping just doesn't click with me at all. It lacks that kind of punchy rhythm, more like he's just "saying stuff".

However, ironically enough, turns out I really dig 2pacalypse. Which I guess ought to have been like a standard gateway drug for the genre.

Just in case you don't know about him, Nujabes could be right up your alley. I had some other good recs, but I can't think of them right now
