PostSubject: Re: Ask Abs   Sun Feb 07, 2016 8:54 pm

If they're the same, and still available, why do I remember hearing about an insta-sellout? I even checked Amazon and sellers have them for $100+...?

I did a little bit of research and found some strange details/comments from consumers. I saw some people say that Arrow's releases of these from 2012 are both superior as well as identical? One person complained about Synapse just putting this out identically as Arrow's version after, "Arrow did all the heavy lifting," and Synapse merely licensed and re-printed it for N.A. territories (not sure if that would be bad, necessarily). Then, looking at the special features from both Arrow's and Synapse's website, I couldn't tell if they were identical or not. There's very little language that describes the special features that actually repeats from one company's description to the other, but when you read them carefully, it appears to be some identical features that are merely described or titled differently. Then after spending enough time with it all, it's finally more obvious that they are indeed different (at least from what's listed, maybe some special features lists are incomplete). For instance, Arrow's release of Demons has two commentaries while Synapse's has only one. And Synapse's release of Demons 2 has more featurettes--listed, that is. I know that sometimes featurettes combine or intersplice and become longer or shorter to either pad or simplify a special features list, or can of course also be edited down for any reason.

I want these, but I don't know what to do. There's an Amazon seller with a new and still sealed copy of Arrow's Demons & Demons 2 steelbook for $64 shipped, and Synapse has both movies separately for a combined $92 shipped (despite these being the same as what's being flipped by re-sellers for double that or more despite being the exact same release from the exact same original first limited run...unless there's something I'm missing here?). The mastering is the same between Arrow and Synapse, right?

Way different, dude. Don May wrote a big blog post about the Synapse transfers here and there are visual comparisons for Demons and Demons 2.

The short of it is that while the Synapse Blu-rays used the same master, they did a whole ton of color-correcting and frame-by-frame fixing of digital artifacting. There really truly is no comparison between the Synapse BDs and all the rest of 'em. The above blog post is a really fascinating read.

Synapse also did a lot of audio editing to get the dubbing to match the voices better, and there's a big deal about the Coca-Cola logo being displayed where at one point it was cut out and the audio got lost with it, so Synapse did a bunch of audio looping to make the song playing sound seamless with the reinserted footage. It's nuts the amount of hours they put into it. They even made unique subtitles for all three audio tracks: US English, international English, and Italian, all with word-for-word subs.

(Synapse have been doing equally meticulous work on Tenebrae, Phenomena, Popcorn, and the 4K Suspiria.)

If you don't wanna spend the money on the steelbooks and don't care for extras or the Italian audio tracks, the movie-only editions might be the way to go. You'll be getting the completely awesome Synapse transfers for a great deal less.

The steelbooks are limited to 3,000 and never sold out; Synapse even commented on it recently how so many customers weren't aware they were still available.

I was reading that but quickly stopped after starting. Damn, I I shoulda spent more time reading that and less time reading forums of ill-informed morons saying things like they were identical releases and that that makes their studio fanboy booties hurt.

[edit]: fuck me just ordered Tenebrae and both Demons steelies for a retarded amount of money.

There are people who try to justify shittier editions. I get not wanting to pay more money and being satisfied with a lesser edition, but trying to write off the superior edition is lolworthy.

Besides, Arrow's Blu-rays were done before the new film archivist and compressionist came in, and other team members have been added since. Arrow used to blow dick in the video quality department but are now mostly great. Now, if there's an Arrow edition, 8 times out of 10 it's better than the rest. (But every now and again you do have someone coming in to one-up Arrow with a new scan.)

What's the deal with the Vampire Hunter Bloodlust Blu suddenly jumping up in price everywhere after having a substantial pricedrop (which I failed to capitalize on), and then shortly after the pricehike it's unavailable from Amazon directly due to it being "under review based on customer complaints"? I can't find anything either in the Amazon reviews nor in a basic web search about any sort of quality control issue.

Might have something to do with r-tards complaining about the transfer or lack of Japanese audio, neither of which can be helped. The Blu-ray looks like an accurate transfer of the master and the rightsholder didn't want the Japanese audio track released here.

It's worth grabbing at a decent price 'cos it's way better than the DVD.

You could probably get it from Discotek directly. Free shipping and they're sometimes priced lower than Amazon. Right Stuf likely also has it.

Deep Dick Counters had a 15% coupon and the regular price was $20.xx so I figured that was good enough.

Ughhhh I'm so phucking dumbtarded. I've been waiting for a few labels to put out a handful of releases I've been highly anticipating and there seems to be endless delays (or at least it feels that way, since I'm literally checking their webshops everyday). To fill the void of not having any new music purchases, I filled my Deep Dished Cunt cart last night mostly with titles I can only say that I have moderate interest in owning, and not even at all that deep a discount.

"TOO MANY GOOD SHIT COMING OUT OF OTHER LABEL! Time for CODE RED to throw some gravy on the meatloaf!"

"TOO MANY GOOD DROPPING FALLIN' OUT OF OTHER LABEL! Time for CODE RED to Scoop up the trash to bring some grindhouse favorite ! BUCKETLIST FEVER!"

"TOO MANY STOOL SAMPLE DROPPING OUT OF OTHER LABEL! Time for CODE RED to Wipe that crap and lay down some DOPE OF A FILM!"

Has Bill Olsen basically accepted the fact that Code Red releases are shit? I feel like the guy's mentally retarded or something.

Didn't realize that criterion.com has a rewards program. $50 gift certificate when you spend $500. Last sale got me halfway there, plus free shipping and no tax? Not ordering through B&N 50% sale anymore lol

That's pretty cool. Looks like I'm almost halfway there myself.

What was nice was them giving away $10 for linking your Criterion and Facebook accounts. They probably stole my identity and are sending lewd pics to my grandma, but hey, I got ten bucks off an item in the 50% off sale, so I got me a Bloo-rey movie for just ten bucks.

Do you keep your DVDs separate from Blus, or just hardly have any and that's why I can't see them?

[edit]: Ooh, I see the Bored of the Rings Inexplicably Extended Editions in the top left corner on the top shelf, so you do separate them...?

Yeah that's the missing 10%; my DVDS and my wife's movies. The only DVDs I even have now are my Synapse titles, my TV shows, and some music/concert stuff.

I've been replacing my DVDs (that are worth replacing) with Blus, which means that the majority of my DVD collection is now also music/performance- and TV-heavy. Movies are probably 70% Blu-Ray now, but I don't separate Blus from DVDs, they all remain mixed in together, arranged alphabetically. The only dividing that I do is movies/television/music & performance. The people that do stuff like arranging by director, or studio, or Criterions and Steelbooks, et al, just baffle me.

You'd still be goofy just for separating Blus and DVDs. Who picks their poison for the evening's entertainment based on whether it's available in SD or HD? WEIRD.

You monster.

My horror stuff I tend to organize by favorite directors, then just by sub-genre or movies that feel similar. Doing things alphabetically is a sure sign that you're a faggot.

I mean, if you have Hellraiser and Hellraiser III, do you not put Hellbound: Hellraiser II in between?

The exception that I do make is arranging a series with differently named titles in order of chronological release. So yes, it goes Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness...Friday the 13th Blu-Ray boxset, Jason Goes to Hell DVD (cuz the Blu disc in the set doesn't have the unrated cut--YEAH THAT'S RIGHT I SAID DVD), Crystal Lake Memories documentary Blu-Ray.

Do you arrange your stuff so retardedly because you select movies retardedly? By "feel"? "Ok, I want to watch something with stunt actors playing monsters with exposed zippers on the monster suit, but it also has to have CGI breasts and weiners, and preferably, it should be in black and white and standard definition, and assuredly it has to have German as the spoken language with burned-in Japanese subtitles. How convenient and time saving for me to quickly visit my Monster/Full Frontal CGI/B&W/German-Jap-Subbed/SD section of the shelf to select this masterpiece, AKA 'Titzkrieg.'"

Or, you could just put it in the "T" section like somebody who doesn't have the neurotic tendencies of a serial killer.

I don't even own any blurays, so that's not an issue.

But when I did have my DVDs on shelves, they're all mostly in boxes right now, I would break them into movies, TV shows, music, and anime. Then just put them all alphabetically within those groups. If a series was involved, the alphabetization was of course based on the general series name and series followed in order. Or if it was one of those cheap but awesome box sets for a particular actor, I kept it in the box and based its placement on the actor's name.

The only thing that makes sense to me is what I (and Jeff) do. I also understand anime, porn and instructional/special interest as their own categories, and splitting performance between music and comedy/other, but I don't own enough titles in those categories to bother with separating them, so they still lump in with how I have everything else.

I love my Synapse DVDs and would put them alongside the BDs if I had the space and had remembered them when doing the re-org.  But they would not be intermingled!

Alphabetic though, that's crazy. I did that with my music once, and after buying an A or B album several times and having to shift everything that was ended real fast

Wait, what? You still put your movies, on shelves though, do you not? What would the style in which you categorize your discs have to do with having to or not having to make room for new pickups? Everytime I have a shelf that's not overflowing (which is not often these last few years lol) I always leave room at the end of each row for about 6-10 future additions so that I'm not moving the entire collection around for every new purchase. Duh

I'd totally watch Titzkrieg.

My problem with doing things alphabetically is if I'm feeling a zombie movie but not any one in particular, I can't easily sift through all the zombie movies I own because the titles escape me. Same with slasher movies which is a genre I have more movies for than any other. It's easier to group movies based on genre or similarity. Sheeit, I'm even thinking about making a Christmas horror section just so Black Christmas, Christmas Evil, and Silent Night, Deadly Night aren't all in different sections, lol.

Here's r_z meticulously alphabetizing his movies:
