I know you like a lot of core and poppy stuff, but for some reason I was just wondering if you like any black metal stuff. It's kind of random, but I was curious.

Black metal has been one genre I have been wanting to get into for quite awhile but I just haven't gotten around to it. I'll probably start picking some things up in the black metal department over the next couple of months to give it a go.

The only black metal or somewhat black metal bands I have stuff by are...

Angelcorpse
Cradle of Filth
Noctifer
Nokturnal Mortum
Nokturne
Satyricon
Shadow Season
Shadows Land

You should definitely get some Wolves in the Throne Room. Even when I didn't really enjoy black metal they were one band that I loved. I'm not sure how easy it would be to come by their stuff in a store down there, though.

They're very atmospheric and while their music is distorted and raw, it has a lot of beauty to it. And at times they have great clean female vocals. Amazing, brah. Amazing.

I'm sure it'll be ridiculously overpriced down here so I'll either get their stuff from iTunes or order it from Amazon UK.

This goes the same for Death metal. I love what I have from the genre but I just don't have that much. The Australian scene is pretty big on hardcore and pretty much anything that ends in the word core so the music stores generally stock heaps of that kinda stuff and it is usually cheaper than everything else.

Yeah, it seems like whenever I read about deathcore or anything like that they're from Australia. I know you have some kind of bandwidth limit, so does that mean you don't listen to much stuff on youtube?

Australia has been putting out some really good quality deathcore and hardcore of late. The scene has exploded with a lot of good bands in the last five years.

My internet cap is unlimited but I tend to go and buy the album instead. Too often I make a judgement based on one song and avoid the album if the song doesn't grab me. If I get the album I make an effort to sit down and listen to each track over and over again if it doesn't grab me at first. After awhile I usually start to appreciate things if I listen to it closely to hear what is going on etc. I used to hate Vanna when I first heard them but after giving them so close attention they ended up becoming one of my favourite post-hardcore/metalcore bands. I know it sounds odd but if I spend money on something I try and make a real effort to like it or appreciate it.

Nokturnal Mortum is aweeesome. Surprised that's on your short list there. Do you like them?

You might like some of the more old school/rockin/punky-crossover/thrashy black metal more than the true/grim stuff, or the fabulously fad-like post/gaze/hipster black metal that get lots of attention these days. So I'd recommend trying:

Immortal
I (<-yes, the letter "I". It's a supergroup of sorts)
Enslaved
Borknagar
Bathory
Emperor

and some newer bands with hardcore/punk elements you could maybe dig are Deafheaven and Woe. Worth a shot at least.

And uhh, maybe some others. I'm mostly into the newer stuff, so if it turns out you do like the more old schoolish things you'd probably have to ask others.

Oh, didn't you used to say that you were limited with your usage?

Well, even if you don't like to listen to one song or whatever, I'd give you some tracks that I think are really good. I'm sure others would too. Tongue That's like the preferred genre around here.

They're the main one I listen to on that listen besides Satyricon. I only have their album Goat Horns. I remember pulling it out of a bargain bin for like $3. Actually most of the black metal albums I got were in a bargain bin as they weren't selling and the store was trying to get them to go so they could make room for new stock.

Immortal is another band that I'll check out early on. I'll probably get everyone to suggest some stuff when I have some spare cash and I'll get a bunch of albums and work my way from there.

Once upon a time I did. Our network provider finally started to up their game in the last couple of years and they have decent internet packages. Mine is like 200GB and then it gets slowed down to like a quarter of our regular speed after I hit that mark, which is a rare occasion of late.

I want to go to a place like that.

Most of the time the albums I pull out of bargain bins are just plain shit but every now and then I manage to find some good stuff.

Hastings had Dew Scented, Hypocrisy, Darkane, and a few other things I considered buying for like .99-$2.99.

I was kind of disappointed, though, as I'm not really into death metal anymore. They didn't have any black metal. Unless you count Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth.

Hypocrisy is another band on a very long list of bands I want to get into. Sucks that when they're touring Australia in January next year I won't be in the country.

What would Dimmu Borgir come under? I always assumed they'd come under some black metal genre but a lot of black metal fans seem to cut them out of the genre.

I'd say their early stuff was. After that, they became more of a symphonic metal band, I guess. It really stopped being black metal around Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia. That's my opinion on it anyway.

I've always assumed they were a symphonic black metal band. I generally classify Cradle of Filth as that up until about Nymphetamine. I have no idea what is going on with Cradle of Filth any more. Are they still pumping out albums? I remember something coming out from them awhile ago. Something with the word Venus in it may be? I stopped paying attention after Nymphetamine

I don't know what Cradle of Filth is doing. I remember buying Damnation And A Day around the time it came out... and I stopped caring after that. I was really disappointed by that album. I only really like from Cruelty and the Beast to Better Suites To Succubi with Midian being the best in their career.

Midian was a good album. That is pretty much the only album I have by them that I enjoy. Other than that it is just a few choice songs here and there from the albums I do have. I remember being really into them when I was in high school but I just got over them really quick.

I think they're that kind of band for a lot of people. You just start getting into extreme metal and you hear about Cradle of Filth. But then once you find out about them, you start learning about more extreme and better bands. Then you just move on to bigger and better things. I still remember buying my first Cradle of Filth cd. Holding Cruelty and the Beast was so surreal to me.

I remember so many of the bands I used to listen to in high school that I thought made me so 'metal'. Slipknot, Cradle of Filth, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Linkin Park etc.

When I was in high school I was just listening to all kinds of stupid shit like Devourment, Last Days of Humanity, Circle of Dead Children, and Cock and Ball Torture. I loved all that noisy death metal and grindcore. Tongue

I got into bands like Slipknot when I was about 15-16. From then until I was about 19 all I did was listen to bands that were pretty much on Roadrunner Records as that was all I thought metal was. I hated death metal until I heard Genesis by Job For A Cowboy and Nile's Ithyphallic Pig Destroyer got me started on grind when I blind bought The Phantom Limb

I think it's weird hearing the kind of stuff I did at that age. Devourment blew my fucking mind when I first heard them. I was like 14. I didn't know shit could be that heavy.

But I guess in Australia you're not really around all that stuff. Up here death metal and shit is pretty easy to find.

Death metal is a fairly small underground scene. Most death metal bands don't advertise or market themselves that much like all the -core bands do. Anything with breakdowns is pretty much the in thing down here.
