Pretty solid shit. It's nice to hear actual death metal every once and a while.

Better than I expected. I still didn't dig it so much, but I'm sure this is better than 99% of whatever shit passes for death metal today.

Yeah I agree. It's nothing amazing, but at least it has some balls.

isn't most death metal nowadays just that deathcore garbage made by guys with neck tattoos, gauaged ears, and a penchant for being violent when it's not necessary?

Pretty fucking much.

Maybe that's why I hate death metal now.

Edit: TBH, I think me and Ian did something interesting with Bloodgorge. It wasn't amazing or anything, but it wasn't typical deathcore bullshit either.

I haven't heard a really good death metal release since A Celebration of Guilt. I actually think the last death metal album I even liked was Once was Not.

Have you heard Disma's "Towards The Megalith"? It's a pretty old school death metal record that came out last year. It's hard to believe it didn't come out in the mid 90s.

Hour Of Penance has put out some really good DM albums too..

I only listened to the first song of this stream and it wasn't bad. But I really don't listen to much DM either

There's good death metal out there. You just have to search for it kind of hard.

The thing with death metal is I have a very hard time listening to bands that have "modern" production. It just takes all the balls out of the music, I think.

Ulcerate isn't bad, but I also feel that the production quality hurts them. It just sounds way too polished. When I think of death metal, I think of dirty, muddy production heard on early Morbid Angel albums, like this:

I haven't heard Mitochondrion. I'll have to check it out.

Death Metal these days also tends to focus way too much on technicality. The only bands I can think of that get away with this are Gorguts and, to some degree, Decrepit Birth. The only thing that makes me like DB are how catchy their solos are.

I feel you. There are a ton of tech death bands out there right now.

Yeah gorguts is still around. They're playing on the Death to All tour actually. First time Gorguts has come around to CA in I think over a decade...

I'm still a fan of melodic death metal when the songwriting is good. For death metal though, I don't care about production or anything like that. I just want it to be somewhat different from everything else in the genre. I feel like bands aren't creative with death metal though and it bugs me. I also agree that technicality isn't that important for me with death metal anymore. When a death metal album has a good atmosphere, it really helps too. That's one of the reasons Disma really impressed me.

I was trying to think of who's cd I bought last year, ha. It was Ulcerate. I dug it in small doses. I find it hard to listen straight through that whole album. Forget what it's called. I remember hearing Mitochondrion and being disappointed. I thought with a name like that I might get some very different and unique death metal... like the death metal equivalent of The Ocean's Precambrian. It was my own fault for setting myself up for something.

I still listen to a bit of new death metal. Nothing you guys would probably like, but who knows.

In particular, I really like the new stuff from Immolation, Abysmal Dawn, Dreaming Dead, and Putrid Pile.

Immolation:

Abysmal Dawn:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFPUZ8crldo

Dreaming Dead:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK1LvHA2vMw

Putrid Pile:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgaimdJKQfE

A funny note is that the female vocalist/lead guitarist of Dreaming Dead was the wife of the vocalist/lead guitarist of Abysmal Dawn. When they were still married he recommended them to me when I was talking to him at an Abysmal Dawn show, he's a pretty cool guy. He's also one of the guest vocalists for the Death to All Tour, but I won't be able to make it to the show in Chicago anymore, which sucks.

EDIT: Your friend's band is pretty good. Nice and traditional.

I've never been able to get through it in one sitting. Sooooooooo boring and it tries way too hard.

And that sucks you won't be at that show, Jeff. have you heard Austaras, from Chicago? This band is their singer/bassist's band.
