Saw Deafheaven, Slint, Mos Def/Yassin Bey and Röyksopp/Robin yesterday.

Deafheaven were pretty killer. The only negative was that the festival sound system was a bit too shitty to handle all the layering. For a festival gig at one pm, they slayed. Singer-dude is totally full of himself, but you can't fault him for lack of effort.  They also played some new song that's out on an EP or something in a few weeks, and I was really impressed with it. I was pretty sure they'd move away from aggression and make more "easy listening"-type songs. However, it was just as heavy as anything they've done so far. Still dynamic, but heavy and still fun. Edit: found a decent vide of the new track on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJGSsRj9Iy0 Forgot to mention that he's kinda changed his vocal delivery a bit (though in this video it's even more pronounced due to the vocals being pretty high in the mix). It's both a bit more black metalish (sounds like he's doing an Ihsahn-impression at times) and also a little bit more focus on rhythm than just screaming, especially during the slower parts.

Slint were a new acquaintance for me, some of the tracks were pretty amazing, while other stuff went into boring pretentious minimalism. Will have to check them out further.

While I've been listening to more and more rap, I've never really given Mos Def a try. His live show did leave me interested, the beats were real good. Unfortunately I couldn't really make out all the lyrics, but he had a great stage presence.

Röyksopp/Robin was boring for the first half hour as it was only Röyksopp+guest singer, and I couldn't care less about them on their own. But from the second Robyn got on, shit was tiiiiiight.

Even the profoundly shitty Say It was all-right due to some creative choreography (as seen on Jimmy Kimmel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ffCNvAN03BU#t=135)

Saw Dispirit last night, in town, for seven bucks. First time I've seen them do more than two songs/40-45 minutes. They played three songs, a full hour. Had sound issues at first, stopped a few minutes into a song and had another ten minute delay finding the problem, but then they turned out one of the best sets I've ever seen from them.

In two days I'm seeing Worm Ouroboros for sure. Still don't know if it's them headlining of Botanist, though. Bonus: this show will be the first place you can buy the Barren Harvest Beautiful Flowers 3x7" boxset, even before weborders. I'ma snatch that bitch up. Expecting it to be sort of expensive (for seven-inches at least), but the show's only seven dollars and I won't have to pay shipping, so whatever.

I went to Jex Thoth yesterday. Awesome as always, but moreso this time. See, her lighter was out of gas when she was gonna light here little sandalwood piece (or whatever the hell it is she parades around with). So what happens then is it looks like she lays down on the stage, I'm maybe 15 feet away from it, can't see. I focus a bit and try to see her. All of a sudden I turn to my left because something catches my eye. I see some drunken woman stumbling around, or that's what I thought until I realized it was was Jessica. She was looking for a light. So she stumbles onto me (she smelled of sweat and incense) and asks if I got any fire, I say "sorry, no" and she leans on me, whirls around and then finds a guy with a light and does her whole piece-of-wood-lighting thing in the audience right in front of me. Amazeballs.

I know she's just a musician doing her schtick, but damn if I wasn't fanboying out like a fourteen year old girl at a Justin Bieber concert.

Also. She so fine.

Seeing Slim Cessna's Auto Club back to back nights, tonight in Santa Cruz and tomorrow in San Francisco. I've never done that before. Guess I'm a groupie now.

Wovenhand plays SF this Friday and I have the night and next day off. It's only fifteen bucks, don't know if I'm motivated enough to make it happen, though. Wife doesn't really know them either, though she is familiar with 16hp.

Gonna be seeing Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly next month. That's like an industrial dream combo right there.

Saw Vattnet Viskar and Wolvhammer last night. Was great.

I'm playing a show with Seidr on Saturday. Austin is doing a solo acoustic set to open. I'll try and film it.

I wanted to see that Wolvhammer show, with Krieg as well. I found out about it happening 10 minutes from me literally the night of the show when it was nearly over already. I clearly need to follow the shows coming here better.

today ACxDC is playing gilman and Run With the Hunted is playing 1-2-3-4 Go Records. Going to miss both. DFA 1979 is tomorrow, but tix are all still selling for well over 100$ on craigslist and stubhub. I'm a big capitalist, but I can't not hate the prices these scalpers are charging and the prices these rich cunts are paying. Just have to hope the scalpers have to drop their prices drastically tomorrow.

Saw Mayhem again. Guys never disappoint. Killer set list. Only problem was they only played Anti off of Ordo Ad Chao and took the rest from the others. That said, everything was pretty awesome. Even the songs from Grand Declaration of War (of which I'm less of a fan) were brutal this time around.

Also, Teloch and Hedger really fit the line up well. I'm really not missing Blasphemer at all.

I just found out last night that Mayhem will be coming to a club like 10 minutes from me in early January with Watain, but that will be just a few days before I get back from my traveling. Kind of disappointing, but I've seen them before and I've never been much of a Watain fan. I guess Watain's live shows are supposed to be interesting, though, but maybe they've toned that down. Oh well.

Watain was incredibly disappointing live. I used to like them for a while, but once I saw them play with Behemoth I just completely stopped liking their music. It will be nice to see Revenge and Mayhem in one night though.

Found out today my parents are going to buy me tickets to the Decibel Mag tour as one of my gifts for the holidays. Seeing the show in NYC because I moved there a couple months ago. Not sure if I'm staying permanently though. Depends on if I can get a better job in the next six months.

Eh it's not really a step up. It's just different. There are advantages and disadvantages to living in the city. I hope it works out though. I'd like to be here for at least a couple years.

Are you there for any other reason than "I just want to live in NYC."?

Two reasons: job opportunities and I can't drive. I want to work in the television and film industries and obviously New York is a great place to be for that. Also, I have an eyesight disability and working in Cleveland is hard, so NYC seemed like a logical place to be. Otherwise, I'd probably be in LA.

Seems logical but challenging. Not being able to drive would be a huge setback in LA. Is the eyesight issue the reason why you can't drive?

Yeah, of course it does, but it's just not very practical, because anywhere close to the area he would want to work would be prohibitively expensive. Unless he wants to work on porn movies.

Oh and Respawned, that sucks man. NYC should be the better fit then.
