I always see them labeled as Progressive Death Metal. The first time I heard them was... I dunno... around the time Blackwater Park came out, I guess. I listened to the title track and didn't really like it. I just labeled them as black metal. Granted... I was very new to death metal and black metal so I would be willing to accept that I was wrong. Now, though, some of their older stuff seems a tad bit more black metal than death metal. Listening to Orchid right now, and the first track sounded a bit black metal to me. What is it that I'm missing or that I'm apparently misinterpreting?

Until Opeth gets some corpse paint they'll always be death metal.

Who cares? Music's going to stay the same regardless of what you call it.

So? It would be nice to know why some of their stuff seems black metalish but is considered death metal. I like the music, I just want clarification.

I'm not saying it's straight up black metal... but it seems like more black metal influence than death metal. I can't really say what it is that makes me think that. Maybe just the quality. It's a bit higher in tone than their later stuff... and doesn't seem as heavy. Even on The Roundhouse Tapes he says something about "Under The Weeping Moon" being "black metal nonsense"

I haven't heard their older stuff but from what i own (Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Damnation) i say they're Prog. I can't be bothered to go into the whole sub-genre thing at times. I want to get their older cds but i checked out their prices today and they range from $20 and up so i might wait until i have heaps of cash to order from Amazon.

Maybe it sounds more raw but raw sound does not black metal make.
