Well... Before I bought the cds I only heard excerpts from one song from each band. Don't me wrong, though... The Asunder excerpt was like 6 minutes long and the Atavist was around 9.

Anyway...

I listened to Atavist first because that's the song I liked the most. They really have their moments. At times, the cd was really great. Most of the time it was just simply there. It wasn't bad by any means... but it was a lot more ambient and droning than I thought it would be. So about halfway into the cd I was getting a little bored. But, eh... when they actually start moving and going to doom sections they're fucking great.

Asunder. Listening to the cd now, finally. After I ordered it, I found out there were only two tracks on the cd and I was slightly worried. It's all good, though. First track is 22 minutes with the second coming in at over 50. This is really fucking good and my favorite of the two. I really have to get their other stuff. It's just so god damn epic and moving. It also reminds me of Grayceon at bits. Not sure if this came out before Grayceon's last cd, but it seems like one was a bit influenced by the other. But yeah, Asunder is just fucking bad ass. I'm listening to the second track now, but during the 22 minutes of the first track I never got bored. I was intently listening to it the whole time and completely satisfied. That is a mark of some good fucking writing.

If you're into the whole sludge or doom thing, you should really check out Asunder.

And yeah, maybe you did recommend them to me already roughdraft... I just didn't recall it. But I'm glad I have heard them now.

I fucking hate it when albums have only 2 songs that are really long. It bores me.

Unless the songs shift pace and change into what sounds like a completely different song, I'm not really interested.

I normally can't stand long songs. Opeth songs bore me immensely most of the time.

I generally have a problem if they're too long. Under 15 minutes is okay for me. But I'm wary of stuff over 15.

These Asunder songs are just damn good, though. I mean, I guess I can't say it seems like completely different songs... but it definitely progresses throughout the song.

What it kind of brings to mind is The Ocean's Precambrian. They sound nothing a like... just the way it flows. It's kind of like if more of the second disc had been combined into fewer tracks. It has that kind of flow, to me. It's like it goes in movements.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it has a reasonable pace and progression. It's not really tedious. (Maybe it would be to other people, but I'm fine with riffs that go on for a minute or two if they're really powerful) And these guys just put so much power and weight into the riffs. You don't really want it to end... and they don't really over stay their welcome.

The only long songs I can really stand are the stuff on Sunn O)))'s 00 Void and the song "Rundgang Um Die Transzendentale Säule Der Singularität" by Burzum. Hell, Altar Of Plagues's Through The Cracks Of The Earth is an amazing release, but I refuse to listen to the album because it only has 2 songs. I really need to get over that.

Dude... You're going to listen to Sunn but then complain about long songs. Tongue

On the subject of Sunn. Have you heard Monoliths and Dimensions? It's so god damn good.

Dude... you haven't even heard their best shit.

Monoliths and Dimensions
Flight of the Behemoth
Black One

In that order, get them.
